A Reece Walsh blinder, and three tries to debutant Jack Bostock, sealed a memorable World Cup win for Australia.
Australia defeated New Zealand 24-22 in the Rugby League World Cup opener at Allianz Stadium in Sydney, highlighted by a Jack Bostock debut hat-trick and a standout display from Reece Walsh. Kalyn Ponga, making his Kiwis debut, scored two tries but suffered a suspected broken left arm and left the field with 10 minutes remaining.
New Zealand coach Stacey Jones confirmed Ponga played through considerable discomfort for about 20 minutes before exiting. Australia coach Kevin Walters praised Walsh's high-workrate performance and Bostock's contribution, while confirming James Tedesco and Sam Walker will play in Australia's next match against Fiji.
