Jaron Ennis Unifies Titles, But Promoter Eddie Hearn Needs Terence Crawford for Superstardom

After a dominant victory to unify junior middleweight titles, Jaron 'Boots' Ennis has established himself as a major force. Now, his promoter aims for a legacy-defining bout with the retired Terence Crawford to make him a global star.

Jaron Ennis unified the WBA and WBO junior middleweight titles with a seventh-round stoppage of Xander Zayas. Promoter Eddie Hearn now aims to make Ennis a superstar by securing a legacy fight against retired, undefeated boxing great Terence Crawford.

After years of trying to establish a major attraction in the American market, Hearn finally has a fighter with the necessary momentum. Ennis’s dominant performance on Saturday night immediately shifted the conversation to his future. While unification bouts against division rivals like Sebastian Fundora or Vergil Ortiz Jr. are available, they do not offer the same promotional impact as a fight with a modern great.

Crawford is the target. A victory over the 38-year-old former undisputed champion would instantly elevate Ennis into the highest tier of the sport. But the matchup presents a serious risk for the retired fighter. Ennis is a champion in his athletic prime, combining elite speed and punching power with relentless pressure. This is a fundamentally different challenge than the opponents Crawford faced at the end of a career that concluded with wins over Canelo Alvarez and Israil Madrimov.

The primary obstacle is convincing Crawford to return to the ring. He retired earlier this year as the undisputed super middleweight champion with his legacy and financial security firmly established. He has given no public indication of a comeback and has little left to prove. For Crawford, facing a dangerous, hungry champion like Ennis would mean risking his undefeated record against an opponent with every possible advantage of youth.

Hearn has successfully built the attraction. His next challenge, however, may be his toughest yet: persuading a boxing legend to risk a perfect legacy against one of the most dangerous young fighters in the world. Until that is resolved, Ennis’s path to becoming boxing’s next mainstream star remains blocked.
