Aston Villa wanted to sign former Brighton left-back Pervis Estupinan in the summer

Manager Ruben Amorim has confirmed he blocked a summer transfer for left-back Pervis Estupinan amid interest from Aston Villa. Villa manager Unai Emery had targeted the Ecuador international as a replacement for Lucas Digne, who departed for Paris Saint-Germain after the French club triggered his release clause.
Following Amorim's intervention to keep Estupinan, Aston Villa completed a permanent deal for Matteo Ruggeri from Atletico Madrid for £17 million. Despite Estupinan facing criticism from supporters, Amorim took full responsibility for keeping him, stating he firmly believes the defender will remain important to the team.
