The 2026-27 NBA regular season will officially start with an afternoon game on NBC between the Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons. Here's why.

The Detroit Pistons are hosting the Boston Celtics in a rare 3 p.m. ET afternoon game on Tuesday, Oct. 20, to tip off the NBA season. The daytime broadcast is an experiment by the NBA and NBC entering Year 2 of their 11-year, $27-billion media partnership. Designed to turn opening night into an all-day event, the game marks the first-ever nationally broadcast opening-day tripleheader in league history.
NBC pushed for the expanded daytime window following strong viewership for its daytime MLB coverage, finding minimal sports competition during the afternoon slot. NBA officials noted Detroit eagerly agreed to host the event, pairing with Boston to create an elite marquee matchup. The league and network will evaluate the television ratings before deciding whether to make afternoon season openers an annual tradition.
