Scott Boland claimed four wickets as Australia left South Africa struggling at 97/5 on a rain-affected second day of the second Test at St George's Park in Gqeberha. Torrential overnight rain washed out six hours of play before an extended afternoon session of 29.4 overs took place. South Africa captain Temba Bavuma remained unbeaten on 41 to lead the hosts' resistance.
Boland dismissed Marques Ackerman and Ryan Rickelton to finish with 4-31, while Mitchell Starc removed Matthew Breetzke. Rickelton scored 31 in a 52-run fifth-wicket partnership with Bavuma before Matt Renshaw took a sharp diving slip catch off Boland late in the day, leaving Wiaan Mulder unbeaten alongside his captain at stumps.
