Ben Simmons appeared to have found his calling (second calling) in Sacramento after spending an entire season away from the NBA. His preseason performances had given the Kings no doubt about their investment.
Ben Simmons has suffered a torn right Achilles tendon during a team scrimmage, prematurely ending his 2026-27 NBA season with the Sacramento Kings. According to ESPN's Marc Spears, head coach Doug Christie was strongly considering naming Simmons a team captain following impressive preseason form. The injury occurred on the same day an ESPN E60 documentary about Simmons' NBA comeback journey was released.
Simmons had signed a one-year deal with Sacramento in September after sitting out the entire 2025-26 season to recover from recurring back injuries. Head coach Doug Christie called the setback a gut punch, while confirming the organization fully supports the 30-year-old as he undergoes surgery in New York City.
