Mitchell Starc gave Australia an early breakthrough but Australia were then put on the back foot

Temba Bavuma and Marco Jansen mounted a fightback for South Africa against Australia on the third morning in Gqeberha, sharing an unbeaten century partnership to reach 216 for 6 at lunch. Bavuma scored 76 not out and Jansen reached 72 not out, including a counterattacking 43-ball half-century, recovering the hosts from 110 for 6.
Earlier in the session, Mitchell Starc dismissed Wiaan Mulder via a DRS review for his 450th Test wicket before Jansen took command against the Australian bowling attack. Australia were shorthanded in their bowling options as Josh Hazlewood had to serve time on the field following an illness absence.
