He fought Muhammad Ali and has had a number of movies made about his life - here is the story of the 'real' Rocky, who inspired Sylvester Stallone

Sylvester Stallone's iconic cinematic character Rocky Balboa was primarily inspired by real-life heavyweight boxer Chuck Wepner. Known as 'The Bayonne Bleeder', Wepner famously knocked down Muhammad Ali and survived until the 15th round during their March 1975 world heavyweight title fight, inspiring Stallone to quickly draft the script for Rocky.
Stallone also drew influence from other fighters, incorporating Rocky Marciano's name and Joe Frazier's meatpacking training routines. Wepner later sued Stallone in 2003 for using his name commercially without compensation, leading to an out-of-court settlement.
