The Story in 60 Seconds

The Los Angeles Lakers have officially waived former first-round draft pick Dalton Knecht to reach the 15-player standard contract limit ahead of the season opener. Los Angeles attempted to trade the 2024 17th overall pick before the final deadline, but could not find a partner. The roster move officially secures the final roster spot for Bronny James, with both players having been excused from practice prior to the decision.

Knecht had an impressive start to his rookie year, averaging 18.9 points in late November 2024, but his role subsequently declined to just 4.2 points per game last season. Lakers head coach JJ Redick explained that changes to team personnel and the addition of multiple wing players led to Knecht's diminished role. Once he clears waivers, the 25-year-old guard will be eligible to sign with any team.
