The Pirates' three-team trade with the Rays was an unequivocal success for Pittsburgh, and that's precisely what makes Tampa Bay's World Series appearance so damning.

Writer Emma Lingan argues that the Tampa Bay Rays reaching the World Series highlights the Pittsburgh Pirates' inability to build a winning roster despite winning a major offseason trade. Tampa Bay defeated the Cleveland Guardians 7-3 in Game 6 of the ALCS to win the pennant after a 98-win regular season. Last winter, the Rays traded Brandon Lowe, Jake Mangum, and Mason Montgomery to Pittsburgh in a three-team deal involving the Houston Astros.
While all three players excelled in Pittsburgh, the Pirates finished just 82-80 and missed the playoffs. Lingan notes that the disparity exposes Pittsburgh's roster construction flaws, particularly as Tampa Bay adapted by adding ALCS MVP Freddy Peralta. The writer warns the situation could worsen if Pittsburgh fails to re-sign pending free agent Lowe.
