Tyler O'Neill's contract could become an albatross that holds back the Baltimore Orioles heading into next season.

Matthew Swigonski of Birds Watcher argues that the Baltimore Orioles will most regret having outfielder Tyler O'Neill's contract on their payroll in 2027. O'Neill originally signed a three-year, $49.5 million deal with Baltimore in December 2024 following a strong 2024 campaign with the Boston Red Sox, but the writer characterizes the signing as an expensive disappointment due to persistent injuries and diminished production.
Over two seasons with Baltimore, O'Neill has appeared in only 139 games, generating 0.2 fWAR, 19 home runs, and 49 RBI. Swigonski notes that O'Neill suffered a season-ending rotator cuff strain in late August 2026, and he argues that paying O'Neill $16.5 million in 2027 could restrict Baltimore's financial flexibility in free agency.
