The Story in 60 Seconds

All 14 provincial rugby unions have signed a letter urging New Zealand Rugby to pause plans to amalgamate urban provincial unions with Super Rugby clubs. The proposal, discussed following the recent Rugby Summit, aims to centralize high-performance development and help NZR address a $20 million financial shortfall. However, the unions argue that NZR has failed to present a detailed business case and fear the changes could disrupt talent distribution and harm the National Provincial Championship.

Gregor Paul writes that the dispute highlights deep-rooted distrust, personality clashes, and a loss of provincial status within the national structure. While NZR seeks annual cost reductions of 5% to 7% across all areas, Paul notes that the NPC remains almost certain to continue as a 14-team competition. NZR chief executive Steve Lancaster and chairman David Kirk are scheduled to discuss the letter with the unions ahead of a planned final board decision on December 9.
