The Atlanta Hawks opened their season with a 132–125 road victory against the Orlando Magic on Wednesday. Atlanta overcame a slow start and defensive lapses by generating turnovers and building a 12-point first-half lead. Four of the Hawks' five starters finished the contest in double figures, with Onyeka Okongwu being the only starter who did not.
Despite Orlando outscoring Atlanta 38–27 in the third quarter while Jalen Johnson battled foul trouble, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and CJ McCollum maintained the offense. Alexander-Walker hit consecutive three-pointers in the fourth quarter to help secure the win before Atlanta travels to face the Charlotte Hornets on Friday.
