John Hanser gave away his golf clubs after a 'massive' stroke. Now he's playing again ... with the help of two very special friends.

Navy veteran John Hanser returned to playing golf two years after suffering a debilitating stroke, supported by his wife Maria and teaching professional Paul Glut. The 90-year-old had previously given away his clubs after the July 2024 stroke severely impaired his speech and right-side mobility. Through the PGA HOPE program at Woodside Country Club in Syosset, New York, Hanser was able to get back on the course.
Maria discovered the veteran-focused golf program in Melville, New York, connecting John with Glut, a Marine Corps veteran and golf instructor. Using a side-seater cart and specialized instruction, Glut helped Hanser relearn his swing and provided him with clubs, allowing the former NYPD officer to play for the first time in two years.
