Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta is expected to receive a new contract, but negotiations are delayed until after the 2026 season, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Contract talks broke down in early October following several weeks of discussions. LaPorta, who is in the final year of his rookie deal, is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in 2027 if no extension is reached.
LaPorta recently expressed frustration with the lack of progress during an appearance on the "Pardon My Take" podcast. Despite the contract uncertainty, he has recorded 27 receptions for 316 yards and three touchdowns through five games this season. The Lions also retain the option to use the franchise tag in 2027, projected at around $17.5 million.
