Key Things to Know
  • The New York Knicks sent a fake championship ring email to employees as a cybersecurity phishing test.
  • Staff who clicked the email link were enrolled into a mandatory cybersecurity training class.
  • The Athletic reported assistant coaches received empty boxes instead of rings during Tuesday's ceremony.
The Story in 60 Seconds

The New York Knicks used an offer for complimentary championship rings as an internal cybersecurity phishing test, according to a report from The Athletic. Madison Square Garden employees received an email in late September inviting them to choose between two ring styles. However, staff members who clicked the link were redirected to a mandatory cybersecurity training class instead of receiving jewelry.

The report arrives alongside reports that several assistant coaches received empty ring boxes during Tuesday's opening ceremony. Additionally, many longtime MSG business operations staff reportedly will not receive championship rings at all. The incidents follow New York's season-opening loss to the Philadelphia 76ers and an ongoing public contract dispute involving Karl-Anthony Towns.
