Some horrendous defensive gaffes betray an otherwise good performance.
The San Jose Sharks defeated the Ottawa Senators 6-2, capitalizing on Ottawa's second-period defensive breakdowns and multiple shots that struck the posts. Tim Stützle opened the scoring for Ottawa, but Nolan Allan, Tyler Toffoli, Collin Graf, and Jacob Trouba scored consecutive goals for San Jose. Despite Jordan Spence cutting the deficit in the third period, two late empty-net goals sealed the victory for the Sharks.
Ottawa started Samuel Ersson in goal after placing Linus Ullmark on injured reserve earlier in the day. Yaroslav Askarov made key saves for San Jose as Ottawa hit three iron posts, including two by Claude Giroux. Former Senator Zack Ostapchuk added one of the empty-net tallies after the Senators pulled Ersson for a six-on-four advantage.
