The Pittsburgh Steelers have reached the part of the season when a defensive lineman can go from watching in street clothes to being somebody the coaching staff desperately needs.

Pittsburgh Steelers rookie defensive lineman Gabriel Rubio faces an expanded role along the defensive front following multiple injuries to key veterans. After remaining inactive for the season's first four games, the 2026 sixth-round draft pick made his NFL debut in Week 5 against the Indianapolis Colts. The Steelers recently placed Derrick Harmon on Injured Reserve due to a foot injury and Sebastian Joseph-Day on Injured Reserve with a triceps injury.
Steeler Nation argues that Pittsburgh should keep Rubio in a meaningful rotational role even after injured players return to develop future depth. Rubio recorded three tackles in his debut against Indianapolis, helping hold Jonathan Taylor to 45 rushing yards in a 34-22 victory. Head Coach Mike McCarthy and the coaching staff are preparing to rely on Rubio as Pittsburgh faces the New Orleans Saints.
