Former Celtic winger Aiden McGeady explained on GO Radio that Celtic's club rules ultimately prevented him from pursuing an international career with Scotland. At the time, Scotland schoolboys required players to play for their school teams, a practice Celtic barred their academy players from doing. Because Ireland did not enforce the same restriction, McGeady accepted an approach from the Republic of Ireland instead.
McGeady admitted he likely would have played for Scotland had they approached him first. He went on to earn 93 senior caps for Ireland between 2004 and 2017, appearing in Euro 2012 and Euro 2016. He also recalled receiving persistent abuse at away grounds in Scotland due to his decision to represent Ireland.
