Shakur Stevenson is demanding Devin Haney vacate his WBO welterweight title as a new condition for their proposed 144-pound catchweight fight. The stipulation complicates negotiations and raises questions about whether the move is designed to create a title opportunity for mandatory challenger Keyshawn Davis.
The public exchange began after Devin Haney’s father, Bill Haney, questioned the delay in making the fight. In a video, he asked, “What’s up with the 144 you said out your mouth?”
Stevenson responded directly on social media with the new term. He stated: “Drop the belt and let’s make it happen then what’s the hold up Billy boy.” This marks a significant shift from earlier discussions, which centered on agreeing to a catchweight, not Haney surrendering his championship status before a deal is signed.
From a negotiation standpoint, the demand places all the risk on Haney. If he were to vacate the title before contracts are finalized, he would lose his primary leverage. Should talks subsequently fail over financial terms or other clauses, Haney would be left without his belt and no major fight secured. Standard boxing practice involves such conditions being met only after a contract is signed, protecting both fighters’ interests.
The situation is further complicated by the WBO, which has ordered Haney to defend his title against mandatory challenger Keyshawn Davis. If Haney vacates, Davis—a close friend of Stevenson’s—would be positioned to fight for the vacant championship. Stevenson has not publicly explained his reasoning, leaving his motives open to interpretation. The proposed fight remains unsigned as Haney’s team must now address both Stevenson’s demand and the WBO’s looming deadline for the mandatory defense.
