Head coach Jim Hiller praised Auston Matthews' evolution into an elite two-way player ahead of Saturday's matchup against the Edmonton Oilers. Reflecting on when he first worked with Matthews in Toronto, Hiller noted that while Matthews always possessed the necessary physical attributes and offensive talent, his mature game now combines shutdown defensive ability with a consistent offensive threat.
During the media availability, Hiller also confirmed Anthony Stolarz as the starting goaltender and announced Dakota Mermis would enter the lineup. In addition, Hiller discussed the challenge of defending Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, while commending Nick Paul's positive off-ice leadership and team impact.
