Former Milwaukee Brewers investor Henry J. Killilea played a vital role in establishing the American League and creating the modern World Series. Known as the "Godfather of the American League," Killilea hosted a foundational 1899 meeting in his Milwaukee home that helped establish the AL as a major league. After his original Brewers moved to St. Louis, Killilea acquired the Boston Americans in 1902 and helped broker the National Agreement between the AL and NL.
In August 1903, Pittsburgh Pirates owner Barney Dreyfuss approached Killilea with a proposal to stage a championship series between their clubs. Killilea negotiated player contract extensions and gate receipts, allowing the inaugural best-of-nine World Series to take place, where Boston defeated Pittsburgh in eight games. Killilea sold the franchise the following spring for roughly $135,000 but remained a prominent legal advisor across baseball until his death in 1929.
