The Ottawa Senators now lead the NHL in shorthanded goals allowed, surrendering their league-worst fourth of the season against the New York Rangers. Despite entering the contest on a hot streak with a 7-4-0 record, Ottawa conceded a breakaway goal to Rangers winger Will Cuylle during the second period. This marked the third shorthanded tally conceded by the Senators over a span of two games.

Prior to the Rangers matchup, Ottawa's power play ranked 29th in the league at 12.2 percent after giving up two shorthanded goals against the San Jose Sharks. With head coach Travis Green overseeing special teams struggles, the unit dropped to 6-for-52 on the season.
