The Story in 60 Seconds

New York Mets catcher Luis Torrens delivered a strong 2026 campaign, earning his second consecutive Gold Glove nomination. Despite serving primarily as a backup, Torrens started 74 games behind the plate and appeared in 86 total at the position after teammate Francisco Alvarez suffered a torn meniscus in May. Torrens registered elite defensive numbers, posting a 12 DRS, a 10 FRV, a 1.86-second pop time, and throwing out 17 baserunners.

In addition to managing the pitching staff to a 3.74 catcher ERA, Torrens surged offensively in August by hitting six home runs across 14 games. He concluded the season batting .235/.295/.396 with nine home runs and a 2.1 fWAR. His strong play led the Mets to sign him to a two-year, $11.5 million contract extension through 2028.
