Mitch Keller just wrapped up one of the worst seasons of his career, putting the Pirates in a difficult spot this offseason. Should they sell low on their former ace, or keep paying him like one?

Writer Brandon Glick argues that the Pittsburgh Pirates face a difficult offseason dilemma regarding expensive veteran pitcher Mitch Keller. After strong prior seasons and a sharp start to 2026, Keller struggled with a 6.17 ERA after May 1 before suffering a season-ending teres major injury in August. With young pitching talent arriving, Glick questions whether Pittsburgh should trade him at low value or retain him.
Keller remains owed over $18 million in 2027 and over $20 million in 2028. Glick contends that trading Keller now would merely be a salary dump, suggesting the Pirates should instead keep the healthier veteran to provide rotation stability if ownership continues roster investment.
