Bruce Carrington retained his WBC featherweight title with a unanimous decision victory over Rene Palacios, but the performance was unconvincing. While the scorecards of 118-110, 117-111 and 116-112 suggest a comfortable win, Carrington was tested and failed to make a strong case.
Throughout the 12-round contest, Carrington controlled the rhythm with his technical skills. He consistently used his jab and effective movement to keep Palacios at the end of his punches, preventing the challenger from mounting any sustained pressure. On paper, it was a professional display of boxing fundamentals. Inside the ring, however, it was less convincing. Palacios exposed vulnerabilities in the champion’s defense on more than one occasion. A significant moment occurred in the eighth round when Carrington went down from a right hand. Referee Harvey Dock ruled it a slip, but replays indicated the punch landed legally to the side of the head. A knockdown ruling would have made the fight considerably closer on the official cards.
Palacios had his best round in the eleventh, landing two clean left hands before a body shot forced Carrington to clinch. Although the champion recovered to see out the final round, the performance fell short of the dominant statement he needed to make. Carrington has been vocal about his desire for marquee fights against Naoya Inoue or WBO champion Rafael Espinoza. This showing is unlikely to strengthen his negotiating position for either. In fact, public perception of a potential clash with Espinoza has changed dramatically. After the fight, many observers suggested Espinoza would be a heavy favourite, with some social media posts urging Top Rank to “feed him to Espinoza,”. Carrington successfully defended his belt and remains unbeaten, but he did little to separate himself from other contenders at 126 pounds.
