Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta addressed recent comments regarding stalled contract negotiations, expressing regret for creating distractions while reiterating his desire to remain with the franchise long-term. Following remarks on the Pardon My Take podcast suggesting he might play elsewhere next season if not compensated, trade rumors briefly emerged linking him to the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers.
Speaking to the media, LaPorta clarified that his intentions are to stay in Detroit as he prepares to welcome a child with his wife. He noted that negotiations are a business and deferred specific contract details to his agent. Meanwhile, The Athletic's Jonathan Jones reports an extension remains more likely than not before free agency, though general manager Brad Holmes could also utilize a projected $17.5 million franchise tag.
