Daniel Sturridge believes Xabi Alonso made a mistake not starting Danny Welbeck during Chelsea's 2-0 defeat to Tottenham.

Former Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge criticized Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso for his tactical choices following a 2-0 Premier League defeat against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge. Speaking on Sky Sports, Sturridge argued that Alonso made an error by not starting experienced forward Danny Welbeck in the absence of the injured Joao Pedro. Welbeck was kept on the bench until the 88th minute of the match.
Alonso instead gave Geovany Quenda his first Premier League start and deployed Morgan Rogers centrally. Sturridge noted that while Quenda is a talented young player, altering the attacking setup disrupted Chelsea's recent structure and rhythm. Following the loss, Alonso acknowledged that Chelsea were not at their best and stated that players and coaching staff share responsibility for the result.
