Paul Skenes is fighting to preserve the possibility of a massive payday, while the Pirates still have to prove they're willing to give him one.

Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes is serving as the lowest-paid member of the MLB Players Association's eight-player executive subcommittee ahead of contentious collective bargaining negotiations. Skenes earned a base salary of $1.085 million in 2026, significantly less than fellow union leaders such as Tarik Skubal, Marcus Semien, and Chris Bassitt. The union remains strongly opposed to MLB owners' proposed economic system featuring a $245.3 million salary cap and a $171.2 million salary floor for 2027.
Emma Lingan of Rum Bunter argues that Skenes is fighting to protect future earning opportunities for himself and future players rather than preserving an existing massive contract. Although a payroll floor could theoretically compel Pirates owner Bob Nutting to invest more in roster payroll, Lingan notes that a hard salary cap could also restrict Skenes' long-term earning potential when he eventually reaches free agency.
