The Story in 60 Seconds

Detroit Tigers rookie Kevin McGonigle has built a compelling case to win the American League Rookie of the Year award following a historic 2026 campaign. McGonigle led all AL players with 7.1 bWAR, batting alongside 97 runs, 28 doubles, 18 home runs, 72 RBIs, and 95 walks. He is the first rookie to achieve those marks in all five categories since Ted Williams in 1939.

McGonigle faces competition from Cleveland Guardians pitcher Parker Messick, though McGonigle has already secured honors from Baseball America and The Sporting News. The three BBWAA finalists will be announced on November 2, with the winner revealed on November 9. If McGonigle wins the award, the Tigers will receive a bonus first-round selection in the upcoming MLB Draft via the Prospect Promotion Incentive.
