Formula One team Alpine have released a statement backing their driver Franco Colapinto after Jeremy Clarkson joked that he would give him a grid penalty just for being Argentinian.

Jeremy Clarkson has sparked controversy after making an offensive comment targeting Alpine Formula One driver Franco Colapinto at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. Speaking to Sky Sports' Martin Brundle while attending the race as a guest of the Alpine team, Clarkson joked that he would give the Argentinian driver a grid penalty purely because of his nationality. Colapinto's manager, Jamie Campbell-Walter, condemned the remarks as completely unacceptable and stated there is no place for such comments in Formula One.
Clarkson clarified his remark was related to a 2014 Top Gear incident where he had to flee Argentina after driving a car with a controversial number plate referencing the 1982 Falklands War. Colapinto received a 10-place grid penalty at the Circuit of the Americas due to power unit component changes.
