George Russell has slammed the five-second time penalty awarded to him in the opening stages of the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix.

Mercedes driver George Russell labeled a five-second time penalty awarded to him during the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix as "ridiculous." Russell received the sanction in the opening stages after stewards ruled he left the track and gained an advantage. The British driver struggled with pace throughout the race, eventually finishing seventh behind McLaren's Oscar Piastri while his teammate Kimi Antonelli secured the victory from pole position.
With Antonelli taking the win, Russell now faces a 123-point deficit in the championship, virtually ending his title ambitions ahead of the Mexico City Grand Prix. Russell cited difficulties in finding the narrow operating window of the Mercedes W17 setup to explain his poor pace. He stated his remaining priority for the season is helping Mercedes secure the Constructors' Championship.
