The Story in 60 Seconds

Stoke-on-Trent residents and Stoke City supporters have strongly criticized former winger James McClean following comments in his new autobiography, The Walls. In the book, McClean claimed he found the area grim and alleged local people gave off a vibe that they had been victimized and were owed something during his spell at the club from 2018 to 2021.

Local figures, including former international squash player Angela Smith, pushed back against the characterization, calling his remarks unfair while defending the community's resilience. McClean was originally signed by Gary Rowett for £5 million on a £30,000-a-week deal, later falling out with manager Michael O'Neill before departing.
