How injured — or how healthy — is Baker Mayfield? That’s unclear after yesterday’s game. Officially, Mayfield threw only 11 passes and was hit just once in the blowout win against Carolina. It was a dream scenario for a guy…

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles stated that leaning on the rushing attack against Carolina "helped him out a great deal" as quarterback Baker Mayfield played through a healing dislocated thumb. Mayfield was largely protected from heavy game action, throwing only 11 passes and taking just one hit in the blowout victory.
Bowles denied that the offensive play-calling was deliberately designed to shield Mayfield, instead crediting consistent running game success for the reduced workload. JoeBucsFan notes that the light day afforded Mayfield another crucial week of recovery while wearing a specialized glove on his throwing hand.
