Geno Smith finally delivered the Jets' best passing performance of 2026. But after another brutal loss, could it be too late to save the team's demise?

The Jet Press writer Michael Carmella argues that despite the New York Jets' Week 7 loss to the Miami Dolphins, quarterback Geno Smith delivered his best performance of the 2026 season. Carmella contends that Smith finally pushed the ball downfield, targeting receivers on intermediate routes rather than settling for shallow checkdowns, notably finding tight end Mason Taylor for two touchdowns.
While acknowledging ongoing play-calling flaws from offensive coordinator Frank Reich, Carmella believes Smith's previous reluctance to take risks unfairly magnified criticism of Reich's scheme. Carmella concludes that although the game showed what the Jets' passing offense should look like, the defeat may still lead to coaching changes.
