Islam Makhachev's coach, Javier Mendez, has outlined how he’d like to see his fighter’s title reign unfold.
Islam Makhachev's coach, Javier Mendez, has revealed his ideal three-fight plan for the UFC champion before potential retirement. Speaking on Submission Radio, Mendez expressed a desire to see Makhachev face Carlos Prates, Michael Morales, and Shavkat Rakhmonov to solidify his legacy as the greatest fighter in UFC history. Mendez clarified that these potential matchups reflect his personal preferences rather than confirmed decisions by Makhachev.
Prates and Morales are scheduled to meet for an interim welterweight title at UFC 336 on January 30, 2027, in Toronto, with the winner expected to unify the belt against Makhachev. Rakhmonov has been sidelined since December 2024 with knee injuries, meaning Mendez's wish list remains contingent on both fighter availability and Makhachev's desire to continue his career.
