New York Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer made NHL history on Tuesday by playing all five minutes of overtime in a 4-3 shootout victory against the Nashville Predators. The 19-year-old became the first skater to play an entire overtime period without a shift change since real-time tracking began in 2009-10. Schaefer logged a career-high 32 minutes and 16 seconds of ice time in the game.
Schaefer contributed an assist during the win to extend his point streak to five games. The Islanders originally held a 3-0 lead with goals from Bo Horvat, Anthony Duclair, and Brayden Schenn before Nashville rallied with goals from Filip Forsberg, Alexander Kerfoot, and Ryan O'Reilly. Kyle Palmieri and Horvat converted shootout attempts to seal the win for goaltender Semyon Varlamov.
