Zack Wheeler returned in 2026 from a blood clot and venous thoracic outlet syndrome to show that he isn't anywhere close to done.
Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler has been voted the National League Comeback Player of the Year by fellow players in the 2026 Players Choice Awards. Wheeler earned the honor after overcoming major health challenges that abruptly ended his previous campaign.
Wheeler had his 2025 season shut down due to a blood clot near his throwing shoulder and subsequently underwent surgery for venous thoracic outlet syndrome. Returning to the mound by late April 2026, the 35-year-old made 28 starts, posting a 14-5 record with a 3.00 ERA while maintaining his prior velocity.
