The new NASCAR Cup Series championship format was always sure to create a few surprises.

William Byron's streak of 142 consecutive NASCAR Cup Series races remaining eligible to win the championship came to an end following the race at Talladega Superspeedway. After finishing second behind Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kyle Larson, Byron dropped 214 points behind the leader with only 152 points available over the final two races.
Byron had qualified for the Championship 4 in 2023, 2024, and 2025, keeping his title hopes active across every race during that span. The upcoming event at Martinsville Speedway marks the first time since the 2022 season finale that Byron is mathematically eliminated from championship contention.
