The Arizona Diamondbacks and veteran third baseman Nolan Arenado are discussing having him play first base in 2027, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com. General manager Mike Hazen stated that adding positional versatility would help manage Arenado's physical workload as he approaches age 36 while providing the front office with added flexibility during offseason roster construction.
Arenado, who has never played a position other than third base in his MLB career, is reportedly open to the concept and may play winter ball in the Caribbean to experiment. Entering the final season of his contract, Arenado will earn $15 million in 2027, with the St. Louis Cardinals paying $9 million and Arizona covering the remaining $6 million.
