The Sabres are still searching for top form early in the 2026-27 NHL season. There are a few areas for potential improvement that would help in Buffalo's quest.

Writer Tim Daniels of Sabre Noise highlights three key statistical areas where the Buffalo Sabres need urgent improvement to remain competitive. Despite a 5-4-3 start to the season under head coach Lindy Ruff, Daniels argues that the team's underlying metrics are concerning. The analysis points out that Buffalo ranks near the bottom of the NHL in five-on-five takeaway share, power-play shooting percentage, and total blocked shots.
According to the analysis, the Sabres sit last in the league with a 43.9% five-on-five takeaway share and 31st with an 8.0% power-play shooting efficiency. Additionally, Buffalo ranks 29th with just 158 blocked shots, a drop from the previous season that has exposed goaltenders Colten Ellis and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen during Alex Lyon's injury absence. Daniels asserts that improving in these areas is crucial for team success.
