The Kansas City Royals exercised their $2.5 million club option on right-handed pitcher Tony Gonsolin for the 2027 season while declining a $13 million option on reliever Carlos Estévez. As a result of the decision, Estévez becomes a free agent and will receive a $2 million buyout from the organization.
Gonsolin joined Kansas City in August 2026 following recovery from internal brace surgery and made just one major league appearance. Estévez dealt with significant injury setbacks during 2026, pitching only one-third of an inning before suffering a foot injury and subsequent rotator cuff surgery in September.
