New of a reported increase the NHL's salary cap ceiling could make Cale Makar's record-setting contract look really team-friendly.

Writer Nestor Quixtan argues that Cale Makar's record-setting $20 million contract could become team-friendly if the NHL salary cap rises as reported. Following insider Frank Seravalli's report of a potential cap increase to $150 million by the 2029-30 season, Makar's salary would drop from 17.9% of Colorado's cap space to just 13.6%.
Quixtan suggests that the rising ceiling will make $20 million salaries commonplace across the league in coming years. The author also projects that the extra flexibility could allow the Colorado Avalanche to eventually afford a similar $20 million extension for forward Nathan MacKinnon when his deal concludes.
