Former unified heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr. has signed a multi-fight deal with Matchroom Boxing. The 36-year-old is preparing for a comeback, with his first fight under the new promotion expected to be announced later this week and broadcast on DAZN.
Matchroom confirmed the signing on social media, stating: “Unfinished business in the Heavyweight division. Welcome to the team, Andy Ruiz Jr. Fight news dropping soon for the former Unified World Champion.” The move reunites Ruiz with the promoter he famously defeated in 2019 when he stopped Anthony Joshua in one of the sport’s biggest upsets. Joshua, Matchroom’s leading heavyweight, reclaimed the belts six months later.
Since losing the titles, Ruiz has fought infrequently. Victories over Chris Arreola in 2021 and Luis Ortiz in 2022 were followed by a 12-round draw with Jarrell Miller in August 2024, with long periods of inactivity hindering his career. To guide his return, Ruiz has reunited with trainer Manny Robles, who was in his corner for the win over Joshua. Ruiz expressed his gratitude for the new opportunity. “I’m so happy and thankful for signing with Matchroom and taking another step forward to continue my mission and to become a two-time champion of the world for Mexico,” Ruiz said. He added: “I believe everything happens for a season and I’m so grateful God is giving me a second opportunity to do everything right. Sometimes God breaks you to make you a better person and a better fighter.”
Matchroom chairman Eddie Hearn believes Ruiz remains a significant threat if he can return to peak condition. “Andy shocked the world in New York with his stunning victory over AJ, and if ‘The Destroyer’ from that night returns to the ring, there is no doubt he can become a two-time world champion,” Hearn stated.
The immediate goal is to get Ruiz active again and assess his form after nearly two years away from competition. While he is not currently viewed as a primary title contender in a crowded division, his name recognition makes him a valuable addition. If Ruiz can secure several wins, the possibility of a lucrative trilogy fight against Joshua could become a realistic target for both fighters.
