Starting pitcher Dustin May declined his end of a $20 million mutual option with the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday, becoming a free agent one day after the franchise won its first World Series.

Dustin May declined his portion of a $20 million mutual option with the Milwaukee Brewers to become a free agent, just one day after winning the World Series. The 29-year-old starting pitcher will collect a $500,000 buyout instead of his 2027 salary. The decision prompted social media reactions from fans, many of whom noted the Brewers were unlikely to exercise the option anyway.
May joined Milwaukee at the August 3 trade deadline and posted a 5.65 ERA across 10 regular-season starts before moving to the bullpen in October. Across two teams, he logged career highs of 31 starts and 145 2/3 innings after previously overcoming multiple major surgeries. May is projected to pursue a multi-year deal in free agency.
