Former unified heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr. has signed a multi-fight promotional deal with Matchroom Boxing. The move reunites Ruiz with the promoter behind his 2019 title victory over Anthony Joshua and sets up an imminent return to the ring, with details expected later this week.
The signing marks a significant step for the 36-year-old, who aims to relaunch a career that has been largely inactive since he lost his world titles. Ruiz became the first Mexican heavyweight world champion when he stopped Joshua in a major upset at Madison Square Garden, but lost the belts in their rematch six months later. Since then, he has fought only three times, securing wins against Chris Arreola and Luis Ortiz before a majority draw with Jarrell Miller in August 2024.
Ruiz expressed his gratitude for the new contract and his focus on reclaiming a world title. “I’m so happy and thankful for signing with Matchroom and taking another step forward to continue my mission and to become a two-time champion of the world for Mexico,” Ruiz said. He also spoke of personal growth following his time away from the sport’s elite level. “I believe everything happens for a season and I’m so grateful God is giving me a second opportunity to do everything right. Sometimes God breaks you to make you a better person and a better fighter.”
In preparation for his comeback, Ruiz has reunited with trainer Manny Robles, who guided him to the victory over Joshua. The fighter is confident he can repeat that success under the Matchroom banner. “I made history with Matchroom and DAZN, and best believe we are going to do it again. Thank you to all my coaches for still believing in me. We are going to make a big statement in the heavyweight division.”
Matchroom chairman Eddie Hearn acknowledged Ruiz’s potential to disrupt the division again if he can return to peak condition. “Andy shocked the world in New York with his stunning victory over AJ, and if ‘The Destroyer’ from that night returns to the ring, there is no doubt he can become a two-time world champion,” Hearn stated. The deal provides Matchroom with another established heavyweight as the division continues to evolve, while offering Ruiz a clear path back towards title contention.
