The Story in 60 Seconds

Beth Mooney has been named captain of Perth Scorchers, taking over leadership duties from Sophie Devine for the 12th Women's Big Bash League season. Mooney, who joined the franchise from Brisbane Heat in 2020 and has made 80 appearances for the team, described the appointment as a little bit daunting. Scorchers head coach Becky Grundy praised Mooney's leadership, professionalism, and competitiveness as the club prepares to open its campaign against Melbourne Renegades at the WACA.

Devine steps down after six seasons as captain, having led the Scorchers to their first title in 2021 and runner-up finishes in both 2020 and 2025. Devine remains the club's most-capped overseas player with 77 appearances. Mooney, who holds the all-time WBBL scoring record with 5,600 runs, previously won consecutive championships with Brisbane Heat in 2018-19 and 2019-20 before moving to Perth.
