Bo Bichette is staying at Citi Field for at least one more season, and the state of the third base market he chose not to test explains why the New York Mets greeted the decision as a win.

Bo Bichette has opted into his $42 million player option for 2027 to remain with the New York Mets, bypassing free agency. MLB analysts, including Rich MacLeod, consider the decision a major positive for the Mets due to an exceptionally thin market for third basemen this offseason. Bichette chose the guaranteed contract over a $5 million buyout ahead of a potential labor stoppage.
Analysts Dexter Henry and Tyler Ward noted the move simplifies offseason planning for president of baseball operations David Stearns. With third base secured, New York can focus resources on pitching and other infield spots. Bichette finished 2026 hitting .260 with 18 home runs after rebounding strongly over his final 114 games.
