U.S. Senator Ron Wyden’s advocacy to keep the Trail Blazers in Portland started years before the Paul Allen Trust even began the process of selling the franchise. After ownership of the team was transferred to a group led by Tom…

U.S. Senator Ron Wyden met with Miami Heat owner and NBA Board of Governors chair Micky Arison to discuss keeping the Portland Trail Blazers in Oregon. Wyden stated he sought Arison's counsel to help advance stalled Moda Center renovation negotiations prior to a December 31 funding deadline. The Blazers ownership group, led by Tom Dundon, faces a vote by the Board of Governors if they pursue franchise relocation.
Wyden's intervention highlights contrasting approaches to arena maintenance, as Heat ownership fully financed and maintained their arena, whereas the Blazers are contesting language requiring them to maintain the Moda Center in a first-class manner. Any relocation attempt without municipal approval would violate the team's Exclusive Site Agreement, potentially triggering significant lawsuits from the City of Portland.
