On this day, 30 years ago, the Philadelphia Phillies hired a young Terry Francona to be their manager.

On October 31, 1996, the Philadelphia Phillies hired Terry Francona as manager, marking the start of his Major League managerial career. Taking over a rebuilding roster, Francona posted a 285-363 record across four seasons from 1997 through 2000 before being dismissed without reaching the postseason.
Francona subsequently achieved major success elsewhere, guiding the Boston Red Sox to World Series championships in 2004 and 2007. Following an 11-year stint with Cleveland that featured an American League pennant in 2016, he took over the Cincinnati Reds in 2025.
